"Predictable" was the fifth and final single from Delta Goodrem's debut album Innocent Eyes. Released in the last quarter of 2003, the single peaked at #1 on the Australian ARIA Charts, becoming Goodrem's 5th #1 single in Australia. This achievement in itself broke the record set by Goodrem herself for the most amount of consecutive #1's from a debut album. The original record was held by Kylie Minogue.

Song information

The song was co-written by Delta Goodrem, Jarrad Rogers and Kara DioGuardi (whom shot to fame by writing the song, "Spinning Around" for Kylie Minogue). The song and produced by John Fields in L.A. Originally, the demo version of the song was rather different from the end product; however, Goodrem desired the song to have a rock edge to it, thus asking Fields to help produce it. The song is set around the theme of a girl rejecting the advances of a man, because she can see through his facade, and knows that if she let's him enter her life, she will end up heartbroken.

The song was chosen by Goodrem's record company, Sony, to be the last single to represent her record-breaking album, Innocent Eyes. Some insiders claim that the single choice came to fruition due to the well-received performance of the song by Australian Idol star, Cosima De Vito.

Music video

Due to Goodrem's cancer treatment, and her inability to shoot a video; Sony used a live video to represent the song. The live video was shot at the Headquarters for Channel V (an entertainment variety show). The video, along with the song was well received. What made the video stand out was the fact that it had no backing track covering it up; instead, just a simple live performance performed by Goodrem.

Chart performance

The single faced stiff competition from competent international and local acts; debuting at a solid #2, behind the then-Australian Idol, Guy Sebastian. With no promotion, due to Goodrem's cancer, this single was heralded as a testimony to Goodrem's popularity amongst Australians. Two weeks after, Predictable reached the top spot, which made it Delta's 5th #1 in Australia, but was pushed back to #2 selling 24,534 singles just behind the Black Eyed Peas "Shut Up".The single remaind in the Top 10 for 8 weeks and began declining.

An open letter to all Black Eyed Peas fans, in particular the humourless radio deejay who called us last week to kvetch about the not-so-glowing pre-show coverage we gave the group: You'll be happy to know we took the high road Saturday night, and rated the Peas' gig based on its merits, not our pre-existing -- how should we say -- aversion to the California funk-and-rap quartet.
